BSc (Hons) Specialist Community Public Health Nurse; SCPHN (school nurse); RGN; Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Education

Practice Teacher and Team Leader for Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Kent ; School Nurse Lead, Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme, ... University

I qualified as a state registered nurse in 1982 and worked predominantly in Accident and Emergency centre nursing as a staff nurse, initially working days and then permanent nights. I believe some of the skills that are required in this field of practice, for example the ability to assess situations quickly, are extremely transferable to school nursing practice.

In September 1994 I joined a school health service as a band 5 staff nurse and have developed professionally and personally throughout my time with the service.

I am currently the Practice Teacher and Team Leader for an area. I also work one day a week as School Nurse Lead for a University on the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing programme, through this I have developed lectures in relation to school aged children and young people and believe that this experience has and continues to enhance my own practice and my teams. I work in collaboration with child and adult nursing pathways to promote the role of school nursing as a career for nurses, once they are qualified.

In 2006 I was honoured to receive a Well Child award for the work that I had undertaken supporting a young person with multiple allergies and their family.

I volunteer for a local Asthma charity; this may be supporting an outreach event at a local supermarket or helping at a fundraising event.

In 2014 the opportunity arose to apply to join SAPHNA as a professional committee member. I feel privileged to have joined the SAPHNA team and the opportunities that the role provides in respect to networking and driving forward the profession of school nursing with other school nurses and professionals both nationally and internationally.
